Why we built a different kind of website monitor
Before building Sentinel, I spent 16 years running customer experience operations — the person whose phone rings when a website quietly breaks. I've used Pingdom, UptimeRobot, MXToolbox and Site24x7 in production. They're good tools. This isn't a hit piece — it's an explanation of the gap we kept hitting, and why we built something that fills it.
The problem: each tool sees one slice of the truth
Here's how the current market splits:
- Pingdom (~$15/mo/site) and UptimeRobot (~$8/mo) — watch uptime and speed. Excellent at it. But they have no idea whether scammers can forge your email, whether your DNS can be hijacked, or whether your SSL renewals are silently failing.
- dmarcian ($25–240/mo) and MXToolbox ($129/mo) — deep email deliverability analytics. But nothing about uptime, speed, or SSL. And their output is raw policy data — you still need a specialist to read it.
- Better Stack ($24/mo) — beautiful uptime + status pages. No email authentication, no security posture.
- Site24x7 ($9–35/mo) — the Indian-origin all-rounder. Broad, but enterprise-complex, and findings still come as dashboards, not decisions.
- Sucuri ($200+/yr) — website security scanning. Doesn't touch email deliverability at all.
The gap we kept hitting
Running CX operations, the incidents that actually hurt revenue were never single-tool incidents:
- A customer received a fake "refund" email from the store's own domain — a DMARC problem.
- An OTP never arrived, customer abandoned checkout — an SPF/DKIM problem.
- A festive campaign burned budget on a site browsers were blocking — an SSL expiry problem.
- A client's site was hijacked at the DNS layer on public WiFi — a DNSSEC problem.
Each of these lived in a different tool, cost real money when missed, and none of them was an "outage" — so the uptime monitor stayed green the whole time. To catch all four, an agency needs 3–4 subscriptions and someone to translate dashboards into plain language for clients. That's ₹25,000+/month in India, plus a human in the loop.
What Sentinel does differently — five specific things
- One scan covers all four incident classes. Uptime + speed + SSL + SPF/DKIM/DMARC + DNSSEC + CAA + HSTS + blacklists + security.txt — 14 checks in ~10 seconds, read-only, no login required.
- Findings are decisions, not data. Every issue renders as: WHAT it is → WHY it costs money (with a real industry example) → WHEN to fix → the exact copy-paste FIX. Pingdom tells you response time; we tell you what to paste into your DNS panel tonight.
- Fixes don't need your passwords. Nearly everything we find lives in public DNS records and hosting settings. You paste our records into your own panel; our next scan auto-verifies they landed. Zero trust required, zero access requested.
- Agencies get their brand, not ours. Weekly PDF reports carry your logo, your colors, your footer — the report your client forwards to their boss is yours. Global tools either don't offer whitelabel at entry pricing or charge enterprise rates for it.
- Built for how India actually pays and alerts. UPI payments with emailed receipts, Telegram + email alerts instead of email-only. ₹2,499/mo for 3 domains — less than Pingdom per-site for a superset of checks.
Where the competitors are honestly better
Three things, and we won't pretend otherwise:
- Global probe networks. If your customers are spread across 40 countries and you need 100+ probe locations, Pingdom and Better Stack win. We probe from India — deliberately — because our market's users are here and the latency truth we report is the truth your customers experience.
- Enterprise DMARC analytics. If you process a million emails a day and need per-sender policy tuning, dmarcian's depth wins.
- Brand history. They've earned decades of trust. We're new — we earn it by showing our own scans, publishing our status page, and giving a 7-day full refund.
The honest bottom line
If you are an enterprise with a security team, buy the big tools — you have people to read dashboards. If you're a digital agency or online store where one person watches the tech, you need the tool that says: "Here are 4 things wrong. This one costs you orders today. Paste this exact record to fix it. Done — verified." That's the gap Sentinel fills, and the full feature-by-feature table lives on our comparison page.
